Abstract. The construction of Lyapunov functions for electric power systems is a challenging task. There is no general method for obtaining these functions. Lately, several methods which arise from Lyapunov’s second method have been proposed and used to construct a Lyapunov function for a given system. In this study, we focus on providing a suitable candidate Lyapunov (energy) function by using the variable gradient method. The used method is based upon Lyapunov's second method. A three-machine infinite-bus power system with the governors and automatic voltage regulators removed is used to validate the used method performance. Simulations show that the variable gradient method provides high-performance in studied power system.
